Solar Tax Credits And Federal Solar Incentives

To help home and business owners cut the costs of purchasing and installing a solar hot water or solar heating system, the federal government, as well as most state and local governments have passed solar incentives.

When combined, these solar incentives can often offset 50%, or more, of the cost of materials and installation for a solar thermal system. These solar incentives are typically available to both residential and commercial customers.

Federal Solar Income Tax Credits:

The federal government offers two different income tax credits for solar thermal systems. One is for commercial customers and the other is for residential customers.

Corporate Federal Solar Income Tax Credit:

Incentive Amount: 30%
Maximum Incentive: No Cap for Solar Thermal
Expiration Date: 12/31/2016

Residential Federal Solar Income Tax Credit:

Incentive Amount: 30%
Maximum Incentive: $2,000 Cap for Solar Thermal
Expiration Date: 12/31/2016

State Solar Incentives:

There are a number of different incentives that State and Local governments offer to solar thermal purchasers. No states, or local municipalities have all of these incentives, but generally have a combination of 1, or more, of them to offer.

Common State & Local Solar Incentives:

  • Income Tax Credits
  • Sales Tax Exemptions
  • Property Tax Increase Exemptions
  • Cash & Production Rebates
  • Low/No Interest Loans & Mortgages
  • Grants & Awards
